A degree in law makes you capable of choosing many careers, not just the legal, as is a common man’s perception. Additionally, a law graduate can become a businessman, social activist, an academician or a diplomat.  Those who pass out of the high ranking institutes have the potential to earn  good  salaries/money. At a law school  you can study environmental law or international law etc. or the  well known  criminal and  civil law.

Post Graduate Degrees in Law

This degree is called LLM, Master of Law. It is of two years duration. The students specialize in the field of their choice. The criteria for admission is LLB or an equivalent degree.

MBL, Master of Business Law

It is  one more post graduate law program. But it  does not have as good a standing as LLM has. Though the course covers a much wider spectrum as compared to LLM. there are two reasons for it not being as good.

The Law School Universities Concept

During the last two and a half decades various states have set up 17 National Law schools, one each in 17 states.  They are autonomous universities. On one hand, they are sister institutions and on the other, they have intense competition among themselves. This leads them to constantly strive for higher standards.

The five oldest law schools  are: NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, NLIU Bhopal,   NUJS Kolkata, NLU Jodhpur. The aspiring students vie for admission to one of these.

NLSIU-Bangalore, NALSAR-Hyderabad, NLIU-Bhopal, NUJS-Kolkata, NLU- Jodhpur, HNLU-Raipur and GNLU-Ahmedabad have joined hands in conducting   Common Law Admission Test(CLAT).  CLAT is held  on the first Sunday of  May every year.  Foreign students are generally exempt from taking CLAT. Basic qualification to join LLM is LLB degree.

National Law School of India University(NLS),  Bangalore

This is the first and the most prestigious law university of India, this law university has catapulted the careers of its alumni to the global levels. Many of them have gone to pursue their higher qualifications from world class universities like Harvard, Oxford, Yale, Cambridge, Columbia, Michigan, and Warwick, to name a few.

Post Graduate Degrees in Law

The  alumni of NLS are  practicing in  trial courts, the  High Courts and the Supreme Court. Some have become law practitioners, and many are in the  corporate law firms both in India and abroad,  yet others are working with  national and international NGOs,  UNO,  the World Bank and the IMF.

NLS  offers two-year LLM program in two branches, Business Laws and Human Rights Laws. Present intake is 50 students.

National Academy of Legal Studies and Research(NALSAR) Hyderabad

NALSAR has come up as one of the best law universities. Established in 1998, it is recognized by the University Grants Commission.  It transforms its students  to become confident law experts, who are  socially sensitive and professionally sound. NALSAR is taking rapid strides to remain among the top few law colleges of India.  The courses are multi-dimensional, with  work and play integrated into them.

Their LLM program has 50 seats for Indian students  and another 10 seats are marked for foreign nationals. The foreign natioal need not come through CLAT. They are to apply directly.

Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi (DU)

This law college of Delhi has been consistently attracting  students from all over India as well as from abroad. These foreign students come from highly developed and developing countries including United States of America, United Kingdom, France, China, Korea, Mongolia, Iran, and  Nepal.

The centre offers LL.M. Master of Comparative Law (M.C.L.),  the entrance test to which  is conducted in June at the Campus Law Centre, Delhi.

University of Mumbai (Bombay)

The  Department of Law of Mumbai University offers a full-time  Master of Law (LL.M.). Course duration is two years, split into four semesters.  They follow the UGC model curriculum. Department of Law of Mumbai university was set up in 1959.

Post-Graduate Programmes of Law In India

The university enjoys the status of Five Star by National Assessment and Accreditation Council. Government Law College (GLC) is one of the first law colleges of India.  Minimum qualification for eligibility is  LLB degree of  three or five years.

National Law University (NLU), Jodhpur

This university   was  established in Rajasthan  in 1999. It  focuses  on learning in the atmosphere which encourages research-oriented minds, so that the needs of the society and the industry are fulfilled. Adequate emphasis is laid on  development of  professional skills to give legal brains of quality to the nation.

Courses offered are L.L.M. in Corporate Laws, L.L.M. in Intellectual Property Rights and Technology Law.

The National Law Institute Unversity(NLIU),  Bhopal

NLIU has been established in 1997. It has a distinct advantage of close ties with  the High Court of Madhya Pradesh. The proximity to National Judicial Academy is an added advantage.

The NLIU campus is located  near the Kerwa Lake on the Kerwa Dam Road.  The beautiful campus has been designed while blending the natural scenic beauty with modern  architecture.  LL.M. course offered here is of two years duration, split into four  semesters.

Allocation of LL.M. subject specializations is  based on  merit, at the time of admission. The class for specialization depends on  the availability of faculty and keenness of adequate  numbers opting.

NUJS is  one of the best National Law Schools of India. NUJS endeavors to inculcate the awareness among its  students to understand the problems of help the weaker sections of our country. The eminent faculty that teach here include legal scholars of national as well international repute.

Post Graduate Degree Offered is   L.L.M., with  two  specializations, the  Commercial Law and International Law. Admission to L.L.M. is based on two parameters: the student must have completed L.L.B. with at least 55% marks and must have been allotted seat through the CLAT.
