Different MBA Entrance Exams

MBA Entrance ExamsAdmission to the management institutes in India and abroad is primarily based on the score of a candidate in an entrance examination conducted by a specific institution, university, board or a management association, following by group discussion and personal interview. Candidates who have obtained at least 50 percent marks in aggregate can apply for the various MBA entrance exams held in India.

The Combined Admission Test (CAT) is conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management. In this exam, the verbal ability, logical reasoning, data interpretation and quantitative ability of candidates are tested through multiple-choice questions.

It is a computer-based test, held each year in November. Besides the IIMs, other reputed management institutions that accepts the CAT score for admitting students to their MBA programs includes the Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi, and the management schools of the IITs and the IISc.


Obtaining a high score in the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a prerequisite for seeking admission to the management schools of the United States and several other countries. The MBA entrance exam is conducted in several countries. In India, currently GMAT is held in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Cochin.


Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is held each year in January to select appropriate students for XLRI, Jamshedpur, and other management schools of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes. More than 85 management institutes across India accept the XAT score for admitting students to the MBA courses. XAT is a paper-based test.


The All India Management Association conducts the Management Aptitude Test (MAT). Four times each year in February, May, September and December, the MBA entrance exams are held in the major cities of the country. Candidates can opt for either computer-based or paper-based exam.

Symbiosis National Aptitude Test (SNAP) is held in December each year for selecting students for the post graduate management courses of Symbiosis International University. In the two-hour paper-based MBA entrance test, candidates are required to answer questions on general English, quantitative and data interpretation, general awareness and analytical and logical reasoning. SNAP is conducted in thirty cities.


The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade conducts a written test in November each year for selecting students for its MBA program. However, foreign nationals and non-resident Indians are selected on the basis of the GMAT score.


A written test is held every year in November for selecting students in the post graduate management programs of the Institute of Rural Management in Anand, Gujarat. The entrance exam is held in 27 cities. The notice for admission is available online or in reputed national English dailies in August.


IBSAT is a MBA entrance exam conducted by the ICFAI University Group for selecting students in the IBS business schools in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Pune and Gurgaon. The MBA entrance test is usually held in December. The entrance exam of two hours duration tests the numerical ability, vocabulary and analytical reasoning skills of the applicants through a series of multiple-choice questions.
